Seductive Slopes on Lake Achensee:
Unlimited fun and variety in Tyrol’s Sports and Vitality Park

The area around Lake Achensee is blessed with outstanding scenery, overflowing with natural beauty and alpine charm. The emerald Lake Achensee is Tyrol’s largest lake and has crystal-clear drinking water. The area around the lake, the Karwendel valleys and the romantic and pristine Steinberg mountain world are Tyrol’s ‘Sports and Vitality Park’, a place brimming with things to do and see, be it winter or summer.

Winter is particularly great: skiers, cross-country skiers, snowboarders, winter walkers and since recently also snow bikers – all of them will find a paradise here. If you haven’t discovered Tyrol’s premier ski region yet, you’re in for a treat – variety and fun are definitely guaranteed with 30 cable cars and ski lifts, more than 50 kilometers of beautifully groomed runs for beginners and experts alike, 170 kilometers of first-rate XC tracks and 150 kilometers of cleared trails for winter walking in untouched nature. Adrenaline seekers may head to the region’s largest ski area, the Christlum, which is situated north of Lake Achensee, to enjoy one of the best snowboarding spots in the Alps.

If you feel like a real challenge, you may try a snow bike - the first winter sports equipment which takes only an hour of practice in order to head down even the steepest of slopes. The Lake Achensee is one of the first area’s in the world to offer snow biking and bikes may be hired at many places in all resorts around the lake. For guests of some hotels, a ‘give-it-a-try’ lesson is even included in their stay. A fun snow bike competition will take place on 14 January 2005; everyone, whether young or old, is invited to participate. Fun and excitement will continue on 26 February with the Saab Salomon Crossmax Tour, which involves teams of four ski crossers simultaneously dashing down a break-neck run interspersed with huge jumps and sharp curves. Another highlight in the Lake Achensee region is the weekly night tobogganing on lit tracks, which makes for memorable snowy fun under starlit skies.

For sports enthusiasts the Achensee region is a first-rate destination in summer too: with sailing, surfing, paddle boating, mountain biking, hiking, climbing, canyoning, paragliding, white-water rafting and lots more, all kinds of outdoor pursuits are catered for. Nature lovers may explore the Karwendel Alpine Park which counts among one of the most beautiful untouched landscapes in Central Europe and is one of the oldest interconnected, cross-border nature preserves in the Eastern Alps. Another attraction on the lake is Austria’s largest privately-run Lipizzaner stud farm with more than two dozens of these noble horses. At the stud guests may take horseback riding lessons or saddle up for a ride out across the outstanding countryside.

Also well worth a visit is the newly-opened Tiroler Steinöl Erlebnismuseum in Pertisau. This museum provides a hands-on insight into the history of the extraction and use of the traditional Tyrolean stone oil, the 'liquid gold of Lake Achensee', which is obtained from oil shale. Other cultural opportunities include a visit to the Notburga Museum and the St. Notburga pilgrimage church or a stroll along the Ars Alpin Arts Promenade at the northern shore of the lake to admire interesting sculptures and paintings.
