Innsbruck and its village resorts

Where city meets countryside

Innsbruck, the capital city of the Province of Tyrol, and its 25 village resorts offer everything visitors could possibly ask for when it comes to sports, relaxation and culture. The region around the alpine city is famed for the majestic beauty of its mountains and the harmonious combination of rich traditions and the vibrancy and buzz of a modern city.

Perfect symbiosis of sport, health and culture

INNSBRUCK OLYMPIA SKI WORLD is the key to enjoy the exhilaration of snow life – year round – with four in six ski areas also offering fantastic skiing and snow boarding on the Axamer, Lizum, Patscherkofel and Stubai glacier in summer.

In summer, sports enthusiasts may switch from skis to bicycles or mountain bikes or venture out to explore one of the many hiking areas, which range from the Alpenpark Karwendel to the famous ’Zirbenweg’ stone-pine trail on Mount Patscherkofel. With the Innsbruck Card visitors may enjoy all the sights and attractions of Innsbruck free of charge. Also included in this card are the use of public transportation and some mountain cable cars, as is a visit to the ’Goddess of Fortune’ at the Innsbruck Casino.

Impressive monuments, imposing art treasures and first-rate cultural events attract many visitors year after year. Besides folklore and brass band concerts, examples of the varied annual cultural calendar include the summer dance festival ’Tanzsommer Innsbruck’, the Innsbruck Festival as well as atmospheric Advent events.

What is more, Innsbruck twice hosted the OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES (1964 and 1976), and therefore offers a rich ’sporty’ heritage, boasting a variety of winters and summer sports opportunities in the mountains around Innsbruck. The Innsbruck ski regions and its Olympia Ski World count among one of the top winter sports destinations in the Alps. Worldwide unique is the free mountain hiking program in summer which offers visitors a choice of 40 tours.

EMPEROR MAXIMILIAN I was only one of the many famous figures who left their mark on the city. Take the city’s landmark, the Golden Roof for instance or the emperor’s tomb in Innsbruck’s Court Church which is considered to be the largest figured, sepulchral monument in the Occident, presenting itself in new splendor after extensive renovation work. Emperor ’Max’ also had a deep love for the mountains around Innsbruck which today can be conveniently accessed by a wide range of cable cars. A ride up the 2,000-meter-high Seegrube affords fantastic panoramic views and is a must-do part of any visit to Innsbruck, no matter what the season.

The 25 villages around Innsbruck have retained their rural charm and – just like the city of Innsbruck – they offer a wide choice of accommodation, ranging from fine hotels to cozy self-catering apartments. Here traditions are not ’invented’, but a cherished part of everyday life. Visitors may experience authentic Tyrolean traditions such as a traditional ’Almabtrieb’, which is a colorful event celebrating the return of the cows from the mountain pastures in September.

The Patscherkofel region and its villages

Aldrans, Ampass, Ellbögen, Igls, Lans, Patsch, Rinn und Sistrans: picture-postcard village resorts just made for exploration!

Here city flair combined with countryside idylls and a wealth of outdoor sports and leisure time activities guarantee a fantastic summer break for all the family. The sunny plateaux of Aldrans, Ampass, Ellbögen, Igls, Lans, Patsch, Rinn and Sistrans invite you to go for a trip to Innsbruck’s local mountain, the Patscherkofel. On top of the Patscherkofel, the ’Zirbenweg’, a 7-km easy mountain trail, leads you across centuries old Swiss stone pine forests. The 9-hole Lans golf course and the 18-hole course in Rinn/Judenstein thrills golfers by its stunning mountain panorama. After teeing off Lake Lanser See is fantastic for a cool dip.
Despite the villages’ vicinity to the city, it is still possible to experience their rural charm. The pretty village of Ampass, for example, boasts a true Baroque gem and fantastic views with its little St. Johannes church and the village of Ellbögen, thanks to its altitude at 1,000 metres, promises fresh summer air in the true sense of the word.
