Austria’s center of ceramics artists since the 17th century, it was here in the Upper Austrian lakeside town of Gmunden where more than 350 years ago the famous green ripple design was created. Nobody knew then that the green ripple ceramics would become

The potter traditionThe natural beauty of the area around Lake Traunsee inspired the local ceramics artists to create extraordinar
y shapes and colors. Very soon a strong craftsmen’s guild developed, not only including craftsmen of decorative and functional ceramics, but also potters, stove-fitters and tile makers who founded their workshops in the area. Strict
guild regulations have ensured the preservation of this traditional craft over centuries for generations. Since the very beginning bright, vivid colors, religious motifs, landscapes and flowers have been characteristic of the area’s ceramic art.
