Waldhausen im Strudengau

The romantic village Waldhausen im Strudengau is located 7 km north of the river Danube, close to the Wachau region and, by car, only 15 minutes from the small town Grein. Getting there is half the fun: from St. Nikola or Sarmingstein the country road winds through the picturesque landscape of the lower Muehlviertel region and opens up marvelous views over the Danube valley.

In Waldhausen there is plenty to discover for all. It is the ideal place for families, singles and seniors looking for a well blended mix of recreation, sports, culture, tranquility and hospitality.

Famous Austrian artists such as Werner and Tatjana Gamerith and Prasthan-Dachauer have chosen Waldhausen as center of their live and work. It is a place to soothe an artist's soul.

The landscape is marked by wooded hills and scenic valleys, at altitudes between 500 and 1.000 m. Off the beaten tourist tracks it is a peaceful haven for those who've seen a lot and appreciate the outstanding, rare and unspoilt.

The baroque collegiate church Waldhausen is certainly one of the region’s highlights. The richly decorated church was built in 1680 by Carlo Carnevale and is known as “Strudengau’s Cathedral”.

Gorgeous views can be enjoyed from the top of the Cathedral tower or from the “Heimkehrerkreuz” viewpoint. To the north-east you overlook Waldhausen’s lake for bathing, fishing and all sorts of water sports.

In winter the K3 ice climbing tower (one of the highest of its kind in Austria) and the downhill ski slopes attract hundreds of winter sports enthusiasts.

Nordic walking, hiking, mountain biking or rock climbing at the Gloxwald make Waldhausen an attractive destination for the whole family all the year round.
