Steyr has one of the most beautiful downtown squares in Europe, where Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo meet each other in harmony. In the middle is the town´s emblem - the lovely "Bummerlhaus", a jewel of late-Gothic architecture.

The mighty Lamberg Castle towers high above Steyr on the foundations of the Styraburg, the very castle to which the town owes its founding.

Steyr is a town with a thousand years of history. A town made for promenades along the impressive main street, leafy avenues or the crystal clear river itself (inspiration for Schubert´s Trout Quintet), Steyr´s location also allows for a wealth of interesting excursions.

At all times of the year, the Romantic Town of Steyr provides reason enough to spend some time here.


A walk through the old dreamy narrow lanes in the summer gives you the impression time is standing still. There is no limit for the visitor´s pleasure to discover. Admire the town´s symbol, the lovely "Bummerlhaus" and the picturesque downtown square that has changed little in hundreds of years.

During wintertime Steyr, the Christkindl Town, is a special attraction. Visit Steyr´s pilgrimage place of Christkindl, named after the Christ child, where a purpose-built temporary post office opens its door every year by late November and answers innumerable letters from children.

A perfect way to get in the right mood for Christmas is to admire the elaborate Steyr Crèche and the elaborate Pöttmesser Crib. Stroll around Steyr and soak up the enjoyable Christmassy atmosphere...

The picturesque surroundings of the Lamberg Castle Schlossgraben provide a unique setting for open-air opera productions. Enacted by international stars amidst Georg Lindorfer's imaginative scenery, Susanne Sommer sets the stage for love's hopeless struggle that is thwarted by bourgeois moral concepts. The baroque Lamberg Castle with its round arches and idyllic passages becomes a stage and the setting for this dramatic and tragically ending love story.
