The Gastein valley, whose thermal springs first brought notoriety, is one of the oldest inhabited valleys of the Tauern region. As the valley itself merges into the larger Salzach valley, so its river flows into the Salzach. Countless attractions give an insight into the historical development of the valley. There is the ‘Entrische Kirche’ for example, a cave where protestants would meet in secret during the time of persecution; Klammstein castle; the church in Bad Hofgastein, dedicated ‘to our dear lady’ and which counts amongst the most beautiful and gothic heritage buildings in the Salzburg state or indeed the church of St Nicholas which is the oldest building in the Gastein valley.
